Turns out the Chihuahua had Onion toxicity which also causes haemolytic anaemia. The difference is that the toxin in onions oxidises the haem so that the red blood cell degrade forming what are called heinz bodies which a pathologist can detect. Yay, no idiopathic origin! the dog will recover well.

Hmm tired, haven't studied today, really should have. Work was quiet. I like Law and Order.

Stuff I learned today:
IMHA = Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (Seen in a Chihuahua)
Test for with Coombs test which detects antibody/antigen complexes on blood cell membranes. It only detects cells with large numbers (400+) of complement or antibody complexes therefore a negative doesn't rule out IMHA but a positive confirms it conclusively.

When you look at blood on slides to identify autoagglutination you should dilute with a drop of saline. Don't mistake the natural chain formations of the blood cells for autoagglution which will form clumps.
